The Cancer Poetry Project: Poems by Cancer Patients and Those Who Love Them
Published in Paperback by Fairview Pr (April, 2001)
Author: Karin B. Miller
Average review score:

Finding Comfort in not being alone
My mother is a breast cancer survivor! I found Miller's book a comfort in that I realized I was not alone in learning to navigate the language and the emotions associated with supporting a family member with cancer.

Hopeful & Affirming
The Cancer Poetry Project offered me hope and affirmed feelings I have experienced. It is a book for survivors, caregivers, friends and clinicians. I felt inspired by the poetry and the profile of each author. I also thought the book was REAL. Authentic people writing about raw emotions as each is on her own journey.

Emotional, honest and hopeful!
The roller-coaster of emotions on the cancer journey for patents and their loved ones are captured here in vivid detail. I was overcome by tears, saddened by the struggles of the poets, heartened by survivors who keep on with life as they are able. I have to read it in small pieces, and chew over the words, feel the feelings, and reflect on my own life through the poetry found within. For me, a breast cancer survivor, this book is daily reading! The poems are written by beginners and professionals, short and long, some heavy, some light in their words. Equally compelling are the biographies/stories of the authors from around the United States. I encourage you all to read it, whether you know someone with cancer of any other chronic illness or not--and give as a gift to those who struggle with those illnesses. It is full of hope in the midst of loss, of encouragement for the bad days, and of light in the midst of the dark unknown that cancer is for so many.

The Caner's Handbook
Published in Paperback by Sterling Publishing (June, 1992)
Authors: Bruce Miller and Jim Widess
Average review score:

The "Bible" of the seat weaving industry!
Of all the myriad of reference books I have acquired in the 25 years working in the seat weaving business, The Caner's Handbook is by far the best and #1 on my entire list.

I was fortunate to purchase my first book (in hardcover), right after it was published in 1984. I had already done every type of seat weaving covered in this book, but through the clear, close-up pictures and accompanying text, was able to fine tune my craft even more.

At each one of my seat weaving classes, and whenever someone asks me what the best all around book on seat weaving is, I tell them to buy The Caner's Handbook. Through the information in this book, anyone can learn to weave with cane, rush, splint, rawhide, Danish Modern, Oriental seagrass, and all types of splints in a variety of designs and patterns.

Jim Widess, who besides co-authoring this book, is the owner of The Caning Shop, where he and his employees not only sell materials used in cane and basketry, but have first-hand knowledge of weaving. They have been doing this for a living for many years, so know all the problems and questions the novice as well as the consumate weaver might encounter.

I urge anyone that is contemplating beginning seatweaving as a hobby or profession to buy this wonderful book, take some time to read and digest it, then go out and conquer the world of seat weaving! There will be no doubt that you will be a professional in no time!

concise, straightforward
this book is far and away from your typical 'how-to' book. These actually want you to learn this skill. You won't be let down with this one.

The only book you need to weave seats
One book that tells you EVERYTHING is The Caners Handbook by Bruce W. Miller and Jim Widess. It is the best I have found. A great book for beginners as well as pros like me who have been in the business for 20 years.

The Case for Legalizing Drugs
Published in Hardcover by Praeger Publishers (January, 1991)
Author: Richard Lawrence Miller
Average review score:

Miller provides the facts to cut through the rhetoric.
Political debate of sensitive issues is too freqently polarized by passion, and too infreqently built upon the foundations of rigorous research, rational analysis and orderly presentation. Miller's book is therefore an invaluable tool for the proponents of legalization. It offers unassailable validity to arguments that are easily dismissed when couched in the shrill voice of uninformed activism. Miller's book is a masterpiece. The single flaw is that the notes are re-numbered for each chapter and the sources cited require two steps to find. But were the connections less exciting, this would go un-noticed.

A fresh look at our nation's most misunderstood problem.
Fantastically written and masterfully researched, this book contains more hard data than any other resource I've seen. My own misguided impressions of America's drug problem have been set straight thanks to this resource. I would never fathom such scenarios and circumstances as those depicted in this book, accounts deftly brought into light with unparalleled skill and remarkable insight. Common sense runs fully through each point the author makes, and vivid analogies provide the reader a capability to understand the complex ideas within... without requiring a degree in sociology, psycology, pharmecology, or the like. All in all, this book demands the highest respect and forces the reader to explore new ideas with an open mind - something the nation's drug education force has failed to do in the last few decades.

The book that changed my beliefs about drugs
Miller goes into meticulous detail, illustrating the harm caused by drugs and drug users, compared to the harm caused by the War on Drugs. He often makes statements that seem to wildly contrast with what most people think is true about drugs, and but for the painstaking use of footnotes after each of these statements which refers to a study, or a well-regarded book on the topic, this book would not nearly be so convincing.

This book is a must read for politicians and anyone who feels strongly about drugs and drug prohibition.

Chicago's South Side, 1946-1948 (Series in Contemporary Photography)
Published in Hardcover by University of California Press (04 September, 2000)
Authors: Orville Schell and Wayne F. Miller
Average review score:

Shocking and Intimate
This book is a treasure. I wish I could find more by this photographer (my searches have come up empty). The photographs take you right inside each scene, and often pack a powerful punch of sadness, joy, intimacy, life. The printing quality is excellent. If the publisher can collect more of his work, I will be the first customer.

Marvelous collection of images
This is a marvelous collection of images from everyday Balck Chicago life in the late 1940s. There are scenes of street life, back alleys, patrons at a pool hall and tavern, and night life ranging from a female personator dressing to Duke Ellington hunched at a piano at rehearsal and an ebullient Louis Jordan on stage.

Brilliant, passionate photography
This is one of the best photographic books I've seen -- ever. Wayne Miller manages to make personal contact with the human beings who lived on Chicago's South Side in a way that few photographers have ever matched. The warmth and complexity of these photographs, the compassion and human understanding involved, are most remarkable -- especially since the photographer stood on the other side of America's terrible racial divide from his subjects. Anyone who loves classic documentary photography, or who simply loves human beings in their complexity, should order this book.

The Big Lie: A Weatherby Mystery
Published in Paperback by Thomas Nelson (February, 1994)
Author: J. M. T. Miller
Average review score:

Compelling, Challenging Mystery Keeps You Riveted
As one other reviewer stated the plot synopsis on the back of the book got my attention and never lost it. Clever, well researched mystery unravels into a serpentine plot involving L.A.'s elite and ultra-rich, East coast mobsters, a former hitman now operating a skid row mission, a woman who's griefing husband affirms she's dead - but has suddenly appeared and asked the novel's protagonist to solve her murder........and it all hinges on the members of a secret fraternity of a New Age cult.

This novel is very pointed about the nature of New Age cults and is definitely not sympathetic, pulling no punches about its subject matter. The only liability that I can note is that the author provides no foreword, afterword or even a summary about her research - even a footnote or two would've lent more credibility to the investigative documents and books her main character uses in solving the mystery. Still a very worthwhile book and far more compelling than most above average Mystery novels you are likely to consider reading.

The Big Lie
I am a fan of mystery and suspense novels. This book fits both categories. It is well written with a likable protagonist in private investigator Artie Weatherby. He is asked to investigate a murder by the victim...
This book goes in depth behind the scenes concerning the New Age movement and its more sinister elements and beliefs. It is a real eye-opener and keeps your attention from start to finish. It is the third book in a series about Artie Weatherby; the others being "Weatherby" and "Weatherby: On A Dead Man's Chest". They are both good, but "The Big Lie" is the best of the three. Unfortunately, this author is deceased, so there will be no more books in this series. However, she did write some other fiction series under the name of Janice Miller. They are good as well (P.I. Alexis Albright).
I highly recomend this book to anyone who likes mysteries or suspense.

riveting and enjoyable!
This book is quite suspenseful and Artie Weatherby is a likeable protaganist. I read through the book quickly as it is a great mystery. It says it is the first in the series, but I just picked up another book by the name of "Weatherby" and it introduces Artie Weatherby for the first time so I guess this is actually the second about this private eye! I ordered a book titled "Weatherby, On A Dead Man's Chest" also about this guy, Artie, which I am looking forward to reading. ....

Body and Soul: Profits With Principles: The Amazing Success Story of Anita Roddick&the Body Shop
Published in Hardcover by Crown Pub (October, 1991)
Authors: Anita Roddick and Russell Miller
Average review score:

No BS
This is very unconventional business book. This is a story about Anita Roddick and her leadership role at cosmetic company called The Body Shop. Anita Roddick exposes the common myths about management. She illustrates perfectly that to be successful we need the only tool - a vision. When her first The Body Shop opened in 1976 in Littlehampton, England, this hippie woman borrowed money for a beginning of her business. She wants her stores to be clean, exciting, and the people who work there to be passionate about their work. And now she do not like to hire anybody from Harvard Business School, but her The Body Shop today is comparable with Revlon or Este Lauder, her unachievable rivals.

Inspiring story of a vionary woman talking common sense
I loved it.

Anita Roddick exposes the myths about mangement. She illustrates pefectly that to be successful we need a vision. Her vision was simple. Employ people who care, employ people who are proud, employ people who will question, employ people who will rattle the cage from within. She perfectly illustrates, in her story about borrowing money, how fickle the typical bank manager was in the 1970's - how we would like to think things have changed.

She is also a realist - she pulls no punches she says.... "Im in this for me!" - yes sure she has an ego to satisfy .... dont we all? - her great quality is that she admits it. Most people do not have the honesty to say it.

I just love how she roots her beleifs about business success in common sense ...... like welcoming new ideas and original thought, trusting your staff and listening to your customers - and then change things.

She also has values that are explicit and wants people who work with her to! also work from a values base

Thank you Anita for a wonderful read - here's to the next edition!!

Profit DOES go with true liberal business ideals.
Interesting to note how few reviews there are of this book. The Body Shop does not kiss the ring of greed and avarice, but shows how holding true liberal priciples of social justice, economic growth through trade, local effort, AND profit go together. Given the lack of female role models in the business world, I would have Body and Soul as a part of any business curriculum. In fact, I am going to do that in my own company's internal training work.

The Campus Guides: West Point U.S. Military Academy
Published in Paperback by Princeton Architectural Press (January, 2002)
Authors: Rod Miller, Richard Cheek, and Alexander M., Jr. Haig
Average review score:

less architecture, more use!
It's an extremely aesthetic book, with beautiful photography and pertinent maps. I would have liked just a little more emphasis on what the buildings are used for, along with the exhaustive architectural notes.

Informative and amusing.
Miller's enthusiasm, likes, and dislikes come through in this wonderful guide to West Point. Rather than the sterile descriptions often found in guide books, Miller's love of architecture lets us know honestly how and why any given building is magnificent, or why it' s an abomination (in his opinion). Full of interesting historical and archectural information and well illustrated, it's also humorous in its sometimes blunt appraisals; in short, everything I want from a living, breathing tour guide when on a tour.

Excellent
A wonderful, well-written, and very interesting guide to the West Point Campus: its buildings and history. The photographs complement the writing wonderfully, making for an all-around great guidebook.

For anyone interested in West Point, or architecture in general, the book is a must. For those interested in a fascinating look at one of our nation's most important landmarks, pick up the book. You'll know more than when you started and you won't be disappointed.

Chairmaking & Design
Published in Paperback by Taunton Press (September, 1997)
Author: Jeff Miller
Average review score:

It could have better designs
Great book to learn different techniques and jigs to make chairs.
The chairs are a little poor from the design point of view.
There is a video that covers the construction of chairs. The book addresses you to the video most of the time, what makes you think of the book as a mean to sell the tape as well.

I think the book explains very well by itself and no tape is necessary. On the opposite, the video is not very valuable without the book.

A great deal at twice the price!!!!
Finally...a book written about how to build something, for people that don't know how to build it!!! Awsome!!! Takes the fear out of building chairs...well NOT all the fear, but at least most of it.

This is a must have book for first time chair builders!!

First rate
I have attended several of Jeff's woodworking classes. He is not only a first rate woodworker, he is a first rate instructor. Even if you don't feel ready to try chair making, this book is worth having for the techniques you can learn.

Children of the Night: Vampires (Ravenloft)
Published in Paperback by Wizards of the Coast (December, 1996)
Authors: Steve Miller, Paul Culotta, and Jonatha Ariadne Caspian
Average review score:

A Choice Collection of Adventures, Tricks, and Traps
"Children of the Night: Vampires" is the first in the "Children of the Night" series, which also includes "Children of the Night: The Created," "Children of the Night: Werebeasts" and the out-of-print "Children of the Night: Ghosts." "Vampires" revolves around imaginative variations of that favorite bloodsucker; it is suitable for use in Ravenloft and in other campaigns, and is intended as a complementary volume to the various Van Richten's books. As with others in this series, Vampires presents 13 mini-adventures, each a story centered around an interesting individual or unusual type of vampire.

The books in this series are a great buy, presenting 13 well-written and potentially expandable adventures in a single accessory. In this volume we are offered quite a variety of creatures, some tied more or less to Ravenloft and its special creatures or cities, others from an "anywhere" background or originally from one of the other AD&D campaign worlds and dragged into the Mists of the Ravenloft Domain of Dread by evil circumstances. In either case, these adventures are readily adaptable to fit the flavor of any campaign, though the style of this first of the "Children of the Night" series seems to assume a greater familiarity with Ravenloft than the other volumes do.

Don't think that becauses vampires are so popular a subject that the possibilities are burnt out: In these adventures we are offered a scarred and wretched man divinely cursed to wander the desert in thirst, only able to briefly quench his thirst through fluid from his victims; a druidic vampiress whose thirsty habits run to tree sap; and a "penanggalan," a horrid female creature whose head flies free from her body and zooms around at night dangling a long black tail, looking for folk to drain. Demihumans and nonhumans are not exempt from the vampire scourge: Here we meet an elf originally from the Forgotten Realms who loathes all vampires--his problem being he himself has become one; an elven vampiress from Dragonlance's Krynn, whose terrible twisted face can stun or kill on sight; a greater vampiric Ixitxachitl; and a dwarven scholar, a "Vampire Sage" with unusual powers who once served the lich Azalin. In the entries specifically tied to Ravenloft are a vampiric slave who was once a Ravenloft Vistana, or gypsy; a sea vampire and his crew of undead pirates; a sadistic, permanently invisible vampire trickster; the scheming vampire niece of Ravenloft's powerful Count Strahd; a "vorlog," a vampiric monster who stopped just short of becoming undead; and a crime boss vampire with sewer alligators for friends. The cover art is good and so are the interior maps, though in general the interior art is not quite up to usual Ravenloft quality. All in all, a choice collection of adventures, tricks, and traps.

Highly recommended for vampire fans running any AD&D 2nd Edition campaign.

--Sharon Daugherty for Skirmisher Online Gaming Magazine

A wonderful addition to any Ravenloft campaign.
This book is full of short encounters with the denizens of the night. Looking for something to throw your party off track or a way to get them moving? With this accesory you'll easily be able to complete the task. In my first Ravenloft Campaign I was hesitant because I didn't think I knew enough about the realm. Using this accessory I was able to keep the campaign fun and exiting for the players without having to jump in over my head and end up ruining the experience for myself. I would recomend this book for all Ravenloft DM's and others as the adventures are designed to be easily used in any realm.

A must have for Ravenloft DMs!
When I bought this book, I was interested, but cautious. I had never run Ravenloft, and even though I knew the setting, I was afraid I didn't have any good campaign ideas. This book changed that. The characters described within are colorful, interesting, and deadly, if done right. The mini-adventures included with each character are easy to adapt to whatever Domain you set you players in and useful as guidelines if you don't want to run them as is. I can't wait for the next Children of the Night book!
